The Ocean, Reimagined: Shells, Shimmer and Chirimi’s Design Outlook for 2026–2027

An exploration of marine-inspired fashion—and how its most compelling ideas can find a place at home.

The ocean offers designers an extraordinary vocabulary: spirals, sculptural curves, luminous surfaces and colours that shift between blue, green and violet. For Chirimi, these qualities provide a starting point for objects that bring visual interest to everyday spaces.

Recent fashion coverage offers several ways to understand this appeal. ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar and British Vogue have each explored marine references in 2026 dressing. Looking ahead, Vogue Business’s Spring/Summer 2027 buyer report identifies further interest in ocean colours and shell details. Our perspective is to translate these fashion observations into considered choices for the home.

2026: Marine Style Gains Texture and Character

In ELLE’s May 21, 2026 feature, “Calling All Summer Sirens,” Meg Donohue presents an elevated interpretation of mermaid-inspired dressing through crochet, netting, nautical references and airy fabrics. The appeal lies in a combination of texture, lightness and playful detail. [1]

For interiors, our interpretation begins with contrast. A luminous shell surface becomes especially expressive beside matte linen, warm wood or softly textured ceramics. These combinations allow each material to contribute something distinct.

Chirimi’s Large Mother of Pearl Shell Tray brings this approach to a dressing table or console. Its natural surface introduces subtle colour, while the ornate rim gives the organic shape a decorative frame. Style it with a small selection of jewellery and leave enough of the shell visible to appreciate its pattern.

The Shell as a Sculptural Object

Harper’s Bazaar’s July 21, 2026 summer jewellery report describes contemporary shell accessories through sculptural pendants, polished finishes and considered combinations of natural shells. Its coverage highlights the expressive potential of the shell’s own form. [2]

British Vogue’s July 5 feature on oversized pendant necklaces similarly includes sculptural shells among the season’s statement accessories. [3]

The design lesson we take from these observations is one of proportion. A distinctive object needs space around it. On a shelf or console, a single curved silhouette can establish a focal point, supported by quieter shapes and a restrained palette.

Chirimi’s Green Galaxy Shell Goblet offers an example for decorative display. The shell bowl, slender stem and clear base create a composition with contrasting visual weights. Its green tones work beautifully against pale stone or cream, while a darker background gives the outline greater definition.

Looking Toward 2027: Ocean Colour and Material Depth

In Vogue Business’s October 14, 2026 Spring/Summer 2027 buyer report, Net-a-Porter’s Brigitte Chartrand identifies recurring aqua and turquoise shades alongside crochet, fringe, shells and pearls. These are observations from the fashion season and an indication of buyers’ expectations for the year ahead. [4]

Our design outlook for the home builds on this direction: marine colour can become more nuanced through materials that hold several tones at once.

Abalone shell is particularly compelling in this context. Its iridescence offers an alternative to a single flat accent colour, allowing blues, greens and violet tones to interact within one surface.

Chirimi’s Aurora Dragon Abalone Shell Jewelry Box introduces this depth at an intimate scale. Place it on a bedside table, desk or vanity, with a simple lamp and a calm surrounding palette. The shell lid becomes the visual centre of the arrangement, while the box provides a place for small accessories.

For Chirimi, the opportunity lies in thoughtful placement and an appreciation of material character. Begin with an object whose shape or surface catches your attention. Give it room, introduce complementary textures, and allow its natural variations to remain visible. This approach creates a personal connection between the objects we choose and the spaces we inhabit.
